Printed Electronics

Electronics printed onto flexible substrates promises to revolutionize the way we use and interface with electronic devices.  From health monitoring to displays, the applications are boundless.  The manufacturing processes, device designs and materials needed to realize the potential of printed electronics are the topic of an intensive collaborative research effort with Prof. Dan Frisbie.  We have developed an innovative approach to producing electronic circuits roll-to-roll from functional liquid inks.  Our process, know as SCALE - Self-Aligned Capillary Assisted Lithography for Electronics - brings together UV nanoimprinting and inkjet printing in a unique way that creates device structures much smaller than the printing resolution and with layer on layer registration that allows the fabrication of complex devices such as transitors without registration error.  Research has recently extended into the fundamentals of capillary flow that are essential for SCALE in collaboration with Prof. Satish Kumar.  https://scale.cems.umn.edu/
